Tire safety tips
Every motorist on the road is responsible for making sure that their car tires are completely safe. The following hints and tips will help you to determine whether or not you need new tires.
Tire lifespan – How old are your tires?
A tires lifespan varies depending on how much you drive your car and how they’ve been stored. There are both chemical and physical reasons that cause tires to age. This even applies to tires that are rarely driven on. This is why it is very important to check the condition of your tires. To be safe we recommend changing winter tires when they are about 3 years old, and summer tires when they’re approximately 5 years old.
All season tires – Should you use them?
For Norwegian roads it is not recommended to use all season tires. This is because if you use all season tires during summer you’ll reduce their quality. So when winter arrives, with its ice and snow, your tires may not perform as they should. In Norway you should use summer tires for summer, and winter tires for winter.
Tread depth – Do your tires meet the requirement?
The part of the tire that grips the road whilst driving is its tread. We recommend that you check its tread depth at least once a month. In Norway your tires tread depth must be a minimum of 3mm during winter. When it is not winter the tread depth must be at least 1,6mm.
Tire pressure – How often should you check?
The correct tire pressure is important for your vehicles driving capabilities, tire lifespan, and fuel consumption. We recommend checking your tire pressure at least once a month. You should also always check before a long journey or road trip.
